If you just received your first yoni egg and you're not sure where to begin, this guide is for you.
Using a yoni egg for the first time can feel a little unfamiliar. That is completely normal. Your body may need time to adjust, and your mind may need permission to slow down.
This guide will walk you through everything you need to know, step by step, so that your first experience is safe, comfortable, and meaningful.
What Is a Yoni Egg?
A yoni egg is a crystal carved into the shape of an egg, designed to be used internally by women. The word "yoni" comes from Sanskrit and translates to sacred space, referring to the vagina and womb.
These tools have been used for centuries, most notably in ancient Taoist practices in China, where they were used to strengthen the pelvic floor, cultivate sexual energy, and support women's overall vitality.
Today, yoni eggs are used for many purposes including pelvic floor training, body awareness, emotional healing, and conscious pleasure practices.
Choosing Your First Yoni Egg
Size: If you are a beginner, start with a Large size. Contrary to what you might expect, larger eggs are actually easier for beginners because the pelvic muscles can feel and grip them more easily. As your practice develops and your awareness increases, you can move to Medium and then Small.
Drilled vs Non-Drilled: A drilled yoni egg has a small hole through the narrow end so you can attach a string for easy removal, similar to a tampon. This is a great option for beginners who want extra reassurance. A non-drilled egg relies on your own pelvic awareness and gentle pushing to remove it.
Crystal: Each crystal carries its own energetic qualities. Rose Quartz is ideal for beginners because of its soft, loving energy. Nephrite Jade is another excellent starting stone with a long tradition in yoni egg practice.
Cleansing Your Yoni Egg Before First Use
Before you use your yoni egg for the first time, it needs to be cleansed physically and energetically.
For physical cleansing, wash it gently with mild fragrance-free soap and warm water. Rinse thoroughly. Pat dry with a clean towel.
For a deeper cleanse, add one to two drops of lavender or tea tree essential oil, or a small amount of apple cider vinegar, to a bowl of water and let your egg rest in it for a few minutes. Rinse clean with fresh water.
For energetic cleansing, you can leave your egg in sunlight or moonlight for several hours, or smudge it with palo santo or sage smoke.
Setting an Intention
This step is one of the most important and most often skipped.
Before you begin, hold your yoni egg in both hands, close your eyes, and take a few slow breaths. Allow yourself to arrive in your body.
Set a simple intention for your practice. It does not need to be complex. It could be as simple as:
"I welcome more awareness and presence in my body."
"I allow softness and healing to move through me."
"I am ready to reconnect with my feminine energy."
Crystals are natural receptors of vibration. When you program your stone with a conscious intention, you deepen the connection between you and your practice.
Preparing Your Body
Your body needs to be relaxed and ideally aroused before insertion. A tense or rushed body will resist the egg, which can cause discomfort.
Take at least five to ten minutes to prepare yourself. Light a candle. Play music that feels soft and grounding. Lie down or sit comfortably. Place your hands on your lower belly and breathe slowly. Allow your body to soften.
You can also massage the outside of your yoni gently with your hands or with a natural lubricant to help your body open and relax.
How to Insert Your Yoni Egg
When your body feels open and ready, hold your yoni egg with the wider end pointing down. This is the end that will enter first.
Apply a natural lubricant if needed. Avoid silicone-based lubricants as they can be harsh on crystal surfaces. A small amount of organic coconut oil works well.
Gently guide the egg to the entrance of your yoni. Take a slow inhale. As you exhale, soften your pelvic muscles and allow the egg to be received naturally. There is no need to push hard. If your body is relaxed and ready, the egg will move in with minimal effort.
Once inside, take a moment to breathe and adjust. You should not feel pain. A slight sensation of fullness is normal.
What to Do During Your Practice
Once your yoni egg is comfortably inside, you have several options for your practice.
Stillness: Simply lie down and breathe. Focus your attention on the sensations inside your body. This alone builds awareness and begins to awaken sensitivity.
Contractions: Inhale and gently contract your pelvic floor muscles around the egg. Hold for a few seconds. Exhale and release. This is similar to a Kegel exercise, but with the added weight and energetic presence of the crystal. Repeat for ten to fifteen rounds.
Movement: Stand up slowly and walk around, dance gently, or practice simple yoga poses. Movement activates different areas of the pelvic floor and helps you discover where you hold tension and where you feel open.
Breathing practice: Combine deep belly breathing with your contractions. On the inhale, visualize the egg lifting up toward your belly button. On the exhale, relax and feel it descend back toward the entrance.
How Long to Keep Your Yoni Egg In
For your first sessions, ten to twenty minutes of active practice is enough. Your pelvic muscles are being used in a new way, and like any muscle group, they need time to build strength without overworking.
If you wish to wear your egg during gentle activities like meditation, walking, or light stretching, you can keep it in for up to two hours. Avoid wearing it during intense exercise, work, or when you simply forget it is there. Rest is as important as practice.
Do not sleep with your yoni egg during your first weeks of practice.
How to Remove Your Yoni Egg
Removing your yoni egg is usually very simple when your body is relaxed.
If you have a drilled egg with a string, simply hold the string and gently pull downward while bearing down as if you were pushing something out. Let gravity help.
If you have a non-drilled egg, squat down, take a slow breath, and bear down gently with your pelvic muscles. The egg will naturally move toward the exit. You can also try this in a warm bath, as the water helps the muscles relax.
If the egg does not come out immediately, do not panic. Your yoni egg cannot get lost inside you. The opening to the cervix is far too small for it to pass through. Simply relax, breathe, and try again in a few minutes.
When Not to Use Your Yoni Egg
-
During your menstrual cycle. Menstruation is a time for the body to release and cleanse. Yoni egg energy moves inward and upward, which is the opposite of what your body needs during this time.
-
During pregnancy. Always consult your healthcare provider before using any internal tool during pregnancy.
-
If you have an active vaginal infection, please wait until you are fully healed before resuming practice.
-
If you have recently given birth vaginally, wait until your body has fully recovered and you have been cleared by your doctor.
Closing Your Practice
When you finish, take a few minutes in stillness. Breathe. Notice how you feel.
This is a good time to journal any sensations, emotions, or observations from your practice. The body often releases things subtly, and writing helps you track your journey over time.
Clean your egg thoroughly after each use and store it in a safe, dry place.
Your Practice Is Personal
There is no right or wrong way to use a yoni egg. Every body is different. Every session will feel different.
The most important things are to go slowly, to listen to your body, and to approach your practice with curiosity rather than expectation.
Your body holds deep wisdom. The yoni egg is simply an invitation to listen.
